Para realizar preguntas en pasado continuo o pasado progresivo (past continuous tense) se escribe el verbo to be en pasado simple (was y were), luego se escribe el sujeto (pronombre personal), y después el verbo principal con la terminación -ing, esta terminación corresponde al gerundio en español. El signo de interrogación solo se escribe al final:
- Was I working…? (¿Yo estaba trabajando?)
- Were you working…? (¿Tú estabas trabajando?)
- Was he working…? (¿Él estaba trabajando?)
- Was she working…? (¿Ella estaba trabajando?)
- Was it working…? (¿Eso estaba trabajando?)
- Were you working…? (¿Usted estaba trabajando?)
- Were we working…? (¿Nosotros estábamos trabajando?)
- Were they working…? (¿Ellos estaban trabajando?)

- Were they selling books there? (¿Ellos estaban vendiendo libros allí?)
